Get stock recommendations, portfolio guidance, and more from The Motley Fool's premium services. Simply put, with the price of a trip to someplace like Walt Disney's hugely popular Disney World on the rise, choosing a cruise is an increasingly compelling option. To put a number on that, a one-day ticket to Disney World runs around $150 per person. That has helped the company increase occupancy levels, ending 2023 at 98% of the pre-COVID average. At the same time, Carnival has been adjusting its business to push customers toward more on-board spending.

Now it's the largest brand owned by Carnival Corporation & plc (of which Arison's son, Micky Arison, is the chairman). The line's most distinct feature is its red, white and blue funnel shaped like a whale's tail. It is wonderful that Carnival is attracting customers who have never been on a cruise before. It improves the outlook for future performance since those customers can become repeat cruisers. But investors need to take this company's talking point with a grain of salt.

It prides itself on friendly service and a plethora of casual yet delectable dining venues. The line is an excellent choice for families, and it offers both short and long voyages at a variety of price points that make cruising affordable for most travelers. It caters fully to a German-speaking market, which means North Americans might find it difficult to mingle with fellow passengers and crew if they sailed on one of the line's 12 ships.

Throughout the years, Cunard vessels have been responsible for serving in wars, transporting immigrants and running transatlantic routes between the U.S. and Europe. The line started out offering necessary transportation but eventually pivoted to the luxurious leisure travel for which the line is known today. Like its North America-based counterparts, Costa sails ships that include several restaurants, bars and entertainment venues but with an Italian flare – right down to gondola decor and pasta galore.

This is a very good story for Carnival, and for the cruise industry more broadly. And it is important to note that cruises are usually booked well in advance. Carnival, for example, locked in a record $6.4 billion in customer deposits in the final quarter of 2023, up 31% since the fourth quarter of 2019. It is likely that many of the customers who have made deposits will be new-to-cruise customers.

Royal Caribbean International is owned and operated by the Royal Caribbean Group, which also includes Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises, among other brands. With just three ships in its fleet, the line is small but specific, offering round-trip voyages from Sydney and Brisbane in Australia and sailing throughout the Australia and New Zealand regions. The line currently relies heavily on its heritage to inform its current identity. On board, passengers will find excellent food, music and customer service, all of which tend to draw slightly older passengers and multigenerational family groups.

In fact, if the new-to-cruise guest count leveled off at fourth-quarter 2023's high rate for all of 2024, 2024 fourth-quarter growth in new-to-cruise guests would be zero on a percentage basis. Meanwhile, if there were a decline in the number, the growth rate in new-to-cruise customers would be negative, even though it would still be at a high rate. The two class' namesake ships ,300-ton Carnival Splendor and 130,000-ton Carnival Dream -- entered the fleet in 2008 and 2009, respectively. While there wasn't another Splendor-class ship built, Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze launched to complete the small, three-ship Dream class in 2011 and 2012. Carnival Fantasy has the longest tenure with the line; it launched in 1990, marking the beginning of the Fantasy class. It also became the first new cruise ship ever to offer three- and four-night Bahamas cruises from Miami. TSS Mardi Gras, the line's first Carnival cruise ship, was purchased from Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd., and sailed for the line from 1972 to 1993. Among these first new builds were Holiday (1985), Jubilee (1986) and Celebration (1987). All three of these first Carnival cruise ships left the Carnival fleet between 2001 and 2009. From that point on, the line would continue to custom-build Carnival’s cruise ships, which gradually increased in size. Carnival Cruise Line pioneered the concept of shorter, budget-friendly cruises with their cruise ships. Its fleet consists of "Fun Ships" that feature a wide array of entertainment and dining venues, most of which are included in the already-affordable cruise fares. Carnival Cruise Line was founded in 1972 by business mogul Ted Arison and was originally a private company.

Duffy also spent 10 years at Maritz Travel Company, the world’s largest corporate meeting, events and incentive travel company where she became the company’s first woman president and CEO. While leading Maritz, Christine played an important role with industry leaders and U.S. Travel during the financial crisis of 2008, raising awareness about the importance of business travel and solidifying support in Washington. Her leadership led to a number of initiatives, including the first-ever public/private partnership to promote international travel to the U.S. creating what is known today as Brand USA. Throughout her career, Duffy has been a strong supporter of women’s leadership in the travel industry, leading initiatives that delivered research and programs to help women advance their careers.

The numbers are impressive today, but they probably won't remain this impressive for very long. It is just too hard a growth rate to sustain given the economic sensitivity of the industry, the inherent constraints of ships and, well, the way basic math works. Carnival has been benefiting from a resurgence in demand for cruises following the effective industry shutdown during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. But that demand isn't just coming from existing cruisers -- there's a whole new contingent of people who are experiencing cruising for the very first time.

Duffy continues to usher Carnival through rapid growth, with the acquisition of five new ships in a period of two years. The cruise line’s fleet expansion continues with two more of its largest and most innovative Excel-class ships in 2027 and 2028. She’s also currently focused on the development of the cruise line’s new exclusive destination, Celebration Key, which opens in July 2025. Under Duffy’s leadership, Carnival became the first major U.S. cruise line to have its entire fleet back in operations after the industry-wide pause related to the COVID pandemic. Duffy’s tenure also includes several major milestones in the company’s history, including the year-long celebration of its 50th birthday in 2022 and the moment it welcomed its 100 millionth guest on board in 2023. There are only so many potential customers, and only so many rooms on Carnival's cruise ships to accommodate them.

And while customers can cancel, most of the deposits the cruise line has collected will likely turn into full payment. To be fair, Disney offers discounts for buying multi-day passes, but with rates like that, you can see why consumers are increasingly looking to cruises. An entire cruise could cost $600 (or less) per person, and includes the cruise, food, and a room.

In 2001, the new Panamax size Spirit class debuted with the Carnival Spirit, the first of the four-ship class within the Carnival fleet. Another Western Caribbean cruise will depart from New Orleans, then make stops to Montego Bay, Grand Cayman and Cozumel in the span of seven days. From May 26 to June 2, the ship will stop in Key West, Freeport and Nassau before returning to the Crescent City. These are the destinations that the Carnival will be traveling to from New Orleans in 2024.

Future expansion will build beyond the five portals, including the construction of a water park. Calypso Lagoon, just to the west, is home to the sport court, the freshwater lagoon and lounging options galore. It’s home to a bar with 50 swings that let visitors dip their feet into the water, and just one of many bars serving the space and two full-service restaurants and other casual snack shacks. The adults-only area of the portal will feature a swim-up bar with a DJ, food trucks and more lounging options. Like several of Carnival Corp.'s other brands, the line came under the umbrella in 2003 during the P&O Princess Cruises merger. Acquired by Carnival Corp. in 1989, Holland America also carries a rich history dating back to 1873.

Carnival Is Attracting a Shocking Number of New Customers, Can It Last?

It initially sailed transatlantic voyages that ferried immigrants between The Netherlands and New York City. As one of the newest Carnival ship installments, Carnival Jubilee includes popular dining joints with Bonsai Teppanyaki and Guy’s Burger Joint. The line continued to expand its Fantasy class, building Carnival Ecstasy (1991), Carnival Sensation (1993), Carnival Fascination (1994), Carnival Imagination (1995) and Carnival Inspiration (1996). The company’s current president is Christine Duffy, who stepped into the role starting February 2015. The fun continues when you reach your port — there’s a huge variety of shore excursions to choose from.

Cruise ships are also including more and more amenities, like amusement-style rides, water parks, and sports facilities, to better compete for traveler's dollars. In 1992, Carnival Corp. acquired a 25% stake in Seabourn before purchasing the entire brand outright in 2001. The luxury cruise line, which includes things like alcohol, Wi-Fi and gratuities in its fares, sails a fleet of lovely ships with a focus on high-end furnishings and next-level service. Founded in 1972 by Ted Arison, Carnival Cruise Line started out with just one secondhand ship, Mardi Gras.

Carnival Corp. took full ownership of Italian line Costa Cruises in 2000 after originally obtaining just 50% in 1997. The brand largely serves the Italian cruise demographic in the Mediterranean. In 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, Carnival Corp. transferred some of Costa's ships to Carnival Cruise Line, touting "Fun Italian Style" and offering North Americans a taste of what Costa has to offer. After four years of anticipation, Carnival changed the game when it debuted its newest and largest class, the Vista Class. Carnival Vista introduced the biggest changes the line had ever seen with a number of firsts -- not only for the line but also for the industry.

According to the company, 2023 unit-adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) exceeded 2019 levels. She received a check for $5,000 from Carnival and a future day pass for the resort, which won’t normally be open to visitors from the island. The line says at least 300 jobs will be generated for locals serving the cruise guests. Debuting in summer 2025, the port of call will welcome ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville, as well as six other U.S. ports.
